A ROAD safety website is asking motorists in Bolton make a new year's resolution - switch off your phone when driving.

The law banning the use of handheld phones was introduced in 2003 and tougher penalties were introduced in February this year. But people continue to use mobiles while driving.

Andrew McGavin, founder of BetterDrivingPlease.com said: "We live in a society where people expect to be able to contact you anytime, anywhere.

"But research released in September showed that using a mobile phone behind the wheel could be worse than drink-driving.

"We have to make it as socially unacceptable as that crime. The only safe thing to do is to switch your phone off when you get into the car. That way there is no temptation to answer it or make a quick call."
