Caswell inspires brave Bolton to a fine fightback

2:18pm Tuesday 29th January 2008

RUGBY UNION: A debut try by winger Phil Caswell and a double from man-of-the-match Danny Joseph saw Bolton leap into the top half of North Lancashire League One.

A potentially tricky fixture started off well for Bolton, as full back JP Singleton scored a fantastic solo try with pretty much his first touch of the ball. Mike Singleton failed with the conversion. Windermere then went on the attack and were rewarded with a well worked try in the corner.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors, as they continually infringed in the rucks and the Windermere fly half made them pay with three points after one penalty.

The hosts scored another try just before half-time and went into the break feeling confident with a 15-5 lead.

Bolton came out for the second half in determined mood and, from a line-out, Peter Marriott scythed through the smallest of gaps to set up debutant, Caswell to breeze in at the corner. Singleton's radar was off target again as he attempted the conversion, but the fight back was on.

Five minutes later, Joseph crossed the line after decent build-up work by Paul Sutcliffe and Kevin McGill. Singleton added the extras to put Bolton in the lead. Joseph scored his second try in the space of 10 minutes. Once again, Singleton added the extras and the fightback was complete.

Bolton will be looking for an improved performance on Saturday when they host league high-flyers Burnley at Avenue Street, kick-off 2.15pm.

The seconds continued their fine run of form with a 19-7 defeat of Oldham to record their fifth win in six games. The thirds moved into the semi-final of the Halbro Shield with a 35-10 defeat of Tyldesley. The fourth team hammered visiting Clitheroe 48-7.

The under-14s were in inspired form as they hammered Eccles 32-0, with the under-13s also winning handsomely - a 30-0 defeat of Tyldesley coming courtesy of tries from Daniel Doyle, Nathan Stansfield, Seb Reilly, Matthew Robinson and Ashley Wilson.

Bolton under-8s beat Eccles, while the under-6s drew with the same opponents.
