Call for referendum on new EU treaty

COUNCILLORS in Bolton will be urged to crank up the pressure on the Government to hold a referendum on the new EU Treaty.

Conservative group leader Cllr John Walsh will put a motion to the next full Bolton Council meeting asking the council if it will vote to tell the Government "to honour its general election manifesto pledge to hold the referendum".

Whitehall had promised to hold a referendum on the EU Constitution, which was abandoned in 2005 after being rejected by voters in France and The Netherlands.

But it is refusing to hold a referendum on the new treaty which has replaced it, rejecting Conservative claims that the document is largely the same as the constitution.

Provisions in the treaty include scrapping national vetoes, giving the European Court of Justice more powers and effectively creating an EU foreign minister.

The abandoned constitution contained plans for a European flag and anthem and they have now been dropped, but the Conservatives fear the UK Government and courts will lose powers to Brussels.

Cllr Walsh said: "I hope councils like Bolton will put enough pressure on the Government to make it realise it has a moral obligation to hold this referendum. The people of Bolton ought to be able to vote on an issue so fundamental to their future.

"I think this treaty comes perilously close to putting us on the road to a European super-state. It will take more powers away from the UK."

But deputy Labour group and council leader, Cllr Linda Thomas, hit back, describing Cllr Walsh as a "Little-Englander".

She said: "Gordon Brown has done great things for the economy and I have every faith he has made the provisions needed to protect our constitution in this treaty."

Liberal Democrat group leader, Cllr Roger Hayes, said "Having made the promise of a referendum the Government should honour it."

Linda Thomas :-

She said: "Gordon Brown has done great things for the economy and I have every faith he has made the provisions needed to protect our constitution in this treaty."

Gordon Brown might have done great things for the EU economy by selling off our Gold reserves when they were at their lowest price for 15 Years..

We are now on the brink of recession , repossessions are rising and banks are foreclosing their credit to customers.

Yes a fine Job indeed.

He has done little to protect our traditions and values and if it means I am going to be classed as a "little Englander" in wanting those protections then I'm proud to be labelled as such.

IF Linda Thomas likes the EU so much why doesn't she pack up from Westhoughton and Go and live there.

Ill tell you why she probably wouldn't be able to because if the traffic congestion her government have created.

What Linda Thomas knows about the EU could fit on a postage stamp.

A Little Englander ? What's wrong with that !

Linda, lets be serious dear, the Churchill nodding dog would be more effective than you and your party.

If you think Gordy has done great things for the economy..why is it in meltdown. Bankruptcy and repossession expected to go through the roof Linda ?

Gordon Brown has done nothing apart from been prime architect of the destruction of England, not withstanding, using it as a cash cow for Scotland.

How does the proposal of the EUs treaty and the Right to strike fit in with Labours policy on Banning police officers and Prison staff from striking?

The APCO and POA plan to challenge to challenge the government over their right to strike under the treaty.

Just one example of How these so called changes directly affect Labour policy here in direct contradiction of what Labour are telling us.

IE A Labour Law that will be overturned by the EU law courts.

It's Absolute hypocrisy.

The argument is whether police should strike or not it is the fact that Labour tell us its not going to affect Britain and This specific challenge is the perfect example.

I quite agree with you both, in all my years I have never known a Goverment so destructive of our British way of life. But I am glad to say that it will in the next couple of years be coming to an end. Surely the British people can see that this govenment is bringing our once great country to its knees with the lies, spin more lies and then more spin. Wake up Britain while we still can. Stop nepotistic Gravy train. Give us the promised referendum on our own future!
Consighn Brown the Clown to the history books. He and his ridiculously excessive Law making mainiacs should be outlawed once and for all.

Rocky, Old bean, I have news for you. She already lives in the EU, as do you. So the question should be - if you hate the EU so much, why dont you pack up and move out of the EU?
