Smoking ruined my life

A FORMER Bolton financial adviser forced into retirement by a crippling illness caused by smoking has told how the habit has destroyed his life.

Keith Orton, who suffers from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), spoke out after Coronation Street actress Liz Dawn, described the way a similar condition led to her leaving the famous cobbles.

Gasping for breath and incapable of walking for more than a few yards, Dawn - who played Vera Duckworth - was forced to quit because of emphysema, a disease she blames on her years as a smoker.

In a moving documentary, the 68-year-old actress, who smoked for more than 50 years, begged youngsters to stub it out before it becomes too late.

She said: "I used to get to the dressing room, and I'd be really breathless before I did anything.

"When you're addicted to smoking, it's very hard to stop. I couldn't answer the phone without lighting up.

"Try your best to stop smoking and especially those youngsters coming up now who are just starting to smoke. I want them to really try to not get addicted to tobacco because it's a killer."

Mr Orton welcomed the actress's bravery in coming forward to raise awareness of the devastating disease.

The 61-year-old from Breightmet, who calculates he has smoked 330,000 cigarettes since he took up the habit as a teenager, was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in 1998. Just 12 months later, he was forced to retire and can only walk a few steps before he struggles for breath.

He is hooked up to oxygen for several hours every day and knows a single blast of cold air this winter could kill him.

Mr Orton, who smoked up to 40 cigarettes a day and started when he was 14, said: "Sometimes I go outside, get a gasp of cold air and I feel everything shut down. I know that this could kill me if I can't get things started again.

"It's so frustrating watching my wife, Joyce, do jobs I used to be able to manage without thinking about, but I am incapable now.

"Making a cup of coffee becomes a major task because I have to walk across the living room and into the kitchen, which leaves me completely breathless."

Since his diagnosis, the grandfather of two has gradually lost nearly all his mobility and relies on a motorised scooter when he leaves his home.

Mr Orton became a founding member of the Bolton Breathe Easy Group, which has recently changed its name to the Bolton Respiratory Support Group.

He said: "When I see teenagers smoking, I'm tempted to tell them: That was me 25 years ago'. You don't ever believe it will happen to you. If I could turn the clock back, I would never have smoked that first cigarette."

How you can quit smoking

  • For local stop smoking service, call 01204 462345. Bolton Stop Smoking Service runs drop-in groups as well as one-to-one sessions.
  • A free national service is available to people hoping to quit smoking, or those who have already stubbed it out. The helpline is open from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. The number is 0800 169 0 169.
  • QUIT is a charity whose aim is to save lives by helping smokers to stop. Smokers can call 0800 00 22 00.
  • The British Heart Foundation also offers help to smokers hoping to quit and can be reached on 0800 1691900.

What causes COPD?
Smoking is the cause in the vast majority of cases. There is no doubt about this. The lining of the airways becomes inflamed and damaged by smoking. About 3 in 20 one-pack-per-day smokers, and 1 in 4 two-pack-per-day smokers develop COPD if they continue to smoke. Air pollution and polluted work conditions may cause some cases, or make the disease worse. However, people who have never smoked rarely develop COPD.

It would appear 25% risk, for a heavy smoker.

Ah, that's right through science at us :-)

Are you seriously uimplying that smoking is not related to a range of lung and throat conditions? That smoking doesn't significantly increase the risk of contracting such diseases? I'm not particularly anti-smoking by the way - if people want to take risks with their own health, that's their choice.

No, as I said if people want to risk their own health. Prohibtion is proven failure and besides the genie is well and truly out of the bottle. Without reopening the can of worms that is the ban debate, it's when others' health is compromised that I draw the line. Tobacco promotion is another contentious one too.

I see no problem with encouraging people to kick the habit either.

But your previous post implied that smoking did not cause early death in many smokers because you drew a fallacious parallel with non-smokers who die young. Smoking is implicated in so many lung, heart and throat illnesses and is widely regarded as being a mjor contributor to early deaths. By experts of course ;-)

So we have a substance that can be legally purchased that is known to have fatal consequences in certain buyers. Why is it not banned? Answer: because of the tax and duty levied on it. All obscured under a freedom of choice banner of course.

Why do they not give us a run down of the jobs people have throughout their lives.
I have a neighbour friend, who was diagnosed last year with lung and liver cancer - they did not know which one was first. The doctor did ask if he every worked with asbestos, diesal was also mentioned. He packed up smoking over 20 years ago, and he is a very moderate drinker. He did have a high risk job, he was a HGV driver for most of his working life, taxi drivers are also high risk for lung problems, breathing in diesal for hours a day is not healthy either.
please do not try and tell us all, that industry has nothing to do with anyone getting problems.
