A father has revealed a more positive side of Madrid after Spanish people rushed to the aid of his son who was injured before Wanderers' match there.

Theo Ogden, aged six, returned home from Wanderers' UEFA Cup triumph in Spain with three stitches to a gash in his head.

But unlike many supporters, he had not suffered at the hands of police who charged fans during the Whites' match against Atletico Madrid.

The youngster had banged his head on a metal rail while chasing a ball in the city before the game.

And his dad Stephen said the Spanish people could not have been more helpful as they rushed to Theo's aid.

Businessman Mr Ogden, aged 39, said: "In a week when the headlines have been about armed Madrid police attacking Bolton supporters, I am full of praise for the people of Spain's capital city.

"One young man had his expensive shirt drenched in blood, but his only thought was to help my son.

"Staff at the medical centre and hospital were fantastic - Theo received first-class treatment throughout."

The accident left Theo with a deep cut and in need of hospital treatment - hours before kick-off.

After being taken to the city's Children's Hospital in his blood-soaked shirt, Theo was given three stitches.

But there was no chance the youngster was going to miss the match. Within two hours he had been released from hospital and was sitting in the Vicente Calderon Stadium to cheer on his team.

Mr Ogden, said: "We left A&E at 6pm assuming we would miss the game, but by 8pm we were in the ground."

Theo was treated to sweets, popcorn and attention from the sympathetic fans.

Mr Ogden said: "Theo is passionate about the Wanderers, so missing the game would have been a double blow for the poor boy. He loved the game and was incredibly brave throughout. He actually wondered what all the fuss was about."

Theo, whose favourite player is El Hadji Diouf, said: "When I bumped my head and was taken to hospital my dad gave me a choice of missing the game. But I wanted to know the score so badly I went to the game.

"One day I would love to play for Wanderers."

Going to the match was part of a week-long holiday for the Ogden family, who live in Bowdon, Cheshire.
