BROMLEY firefighters are saving lives for free without even putting out fires.
In a bid to stop more fatal fires, Bromley Fire Brigade is donating up to 100 smoke alarms to Broomleigh Housing Association to be handed out to residents who do not already have smoke alarms.
Following a fatal fire in one of its Mottingham properties, Broomleigh Housing stepped up its existing fire safety information scheme for residents but was overwhelmed by the intensity of the response it received.
Station Officer Tony Podd said: "At a cost of about £5, battery-operated smoke alarms are a vital life-saving device. Research has shown that about 80 per cent of fires happen in houses which dont have smoke alarms fitted. We are happy to help Broomleigh where we can."
