Scrap fuel duty increase plan - MP

BOLTON North-east MP David Crausby is calling on Chancellor Alistair Darling to scrap the planned price increase in fuel duty on petrol and diesel.

Fuel prices are already more than £1 a litre and will rise again by 2p in April with the new duty.

After adding his name to a motion in Parliament, Mr Crausby admitted the Government was at the mercy of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which is based in Saudi Arabia and charging more than $100 dollars for a barrel.

But he added: "The Government does have control over the amount of duty they collect from British motorists."

He said the 2p duty rise would mean a significant financial burden on those on low incomes and those who lived in rural areas where public transport inadequate.

its already %70 duty on fuel, if we have to charge so much, how can america sell it for a third of the price? 2p won't make much difference, it needs to go down.

David Crausby, speaking in the House of Commons on climate change recently, said "Too few people in the UK or abroad are much inclined to abandon, for example, their cars ". Presumably any attempts to tackle climate change would involve tax increases. So isn't this inconsistent?

We should have another fuel blockade. This time just drive into the cities from every direction, never mind forming up. We all call the French, but at least they stand up for what they think is right, and not waiting to be crapped on.

All taxes should be 'hypothecated'. We should be told where each penny is spent and in the case of this appalling government wasted.
They should give us the total of all the failed schemes: private pension destruction, tax-credit fiasco, illegal wars, fines paid to Europe, PFI disasters etc. Then tell us why they need more tax on fuel.

here here!! I'm a 22 year old earning what i think is a relatively meagre wage, how the hell do they expect us to keep going to work to earn decent living to be able to pay these fuel prices, house prices and everything else that costs so much these days?? I work 60 hours a week minimum and still cant afford to get a house as the mortgage I'd get wouldnt come anywhere close to it. If taxes and everything else keeps rising the way it is doing, we'll all be out on the streets before we know it! America has it right, fair fuel prices NOW!!

I remember going to the states when it was on 50cents/gallon!! and that was only in 1996!!!
