Horse crossing installed in Moses Gate

A ROAD crossing with a difference has been installed in a Bolton park - it is for horses.

Riders now have a special facility to help them cross Hall Lane, which runs through Moses Gate Country Park.

The Equestrian Crossing has higher buttons than normal crossings to allow riders to push them without dismounting, while also catering for pedestrians and cyclists by having buttons at the usual height.

It will make it easier for people who ride in the park to cross the busy road between the two halves of the park.

Julie Ashcroft, of Castle Croft, Harwood, is pleased Bolton Council is installing the crossing.

She has two horses and rides them in the park.

"I think it's fantastic," she said.

"You get to the road and it's like a race track because of speeding. It's an accident waiting to happen.

"It's difficult to cross, so I think what has been done with the crossing is fabulous.

"The buttons are high enough that you don't have to dismount, you can press the buttons while you're on your horse and you feel safe.

"It was dangerous before and you can never say never about there being an accident but I think this is a good solution."

Cllr Sean Hornby, who represents Little Lever and Darcy Lever and chairs Bolton Council's planning committee, said: "I welcome the crossing as anything that improves safety has to be a good thing.

"I don't see any major problems with it being on the road."

However, Cllr Anthony Connell, who also represents the ward, said it was important the crossing was made easily visible to drivers.

"Drivers will have to be aware of it," he said.

Can we forget the horses for one moment and read the article again? This crossing is for pedestrians and cyclists as well as horses and riders. No doubt the horse aspect makes the item a little more newsworthy but it isn’t just for them! I worked as a ranger at Moses Gate from 1978 until a few years ago, and for me the title of the article would refer more to the fact that this crossing has been needed since the conception of the Country Park over 30 years ago!

Even when there was much reduced traffic in 1980 it was still very dangerous to cross at its junction with the track known as Fogg Lane The Ranger Service and the old Greater Manchester Council looked into several ways of providing a safe crossing, amongst them using the track that is under the road bridge over the River Croal as a subway. Sadly the demise of GMC in 1986 and loss of funding that it provided for the countryside schemes meant plans had to be shelved.

I would suggest that those of you complaining about a waste of money visit the location first and see why it is so desperately needed. When crossing from the Rock Hall side visibility to the right is limited to literally a few yards and is at the bottom of a hill so traffic is often well over the speed limit. If it had been an intersection of two roads, action would have been taken many years ago, in fact I can’t think of a junction anywhere in Bolton MBC that has such limited visibility. It is miraculous that there hasn’t been a serious accident here in the past, probably due to people too scared to use it!

The installation of this crossing will mean that the huge and largely unused part of the Country Park that is north of Hall Lane will at last be able to be safely accessed by ALL users from the very popular southern section that contains Crompton Lodges, Rock Hall Visitor Centre and the main car park for the area. It will also encourage more users of the Kingfisher Trail and other walking routes that cross Hall Lane at this point.

Sorry I had meant to say
"a junction on a main road anywhere in Bolton"
at the end of the penultimate paragraph.
