A protected bird has been shot dead by a coward with an air rifle.

Police were called to Ladyshore Road, in Little Lever, following a report that a shot had been heard shortly after 7.15am on Monday.

Officers found a coot had been shot and killed.

The dead bird was recovered and examined by officials of Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act it is illegal to kill these birds during the mating season which lasts from March to July.

Constable Diane Riley, Wildlife Liaison Officer for Bolton, said: "This was a cowardly attack on a defenceless bird, which I am sure will shock the local community.

"The path that runs along the canal is popular with dog walkers and cyclists and I am sure they will be concerned that someone is capable of killing a wild animal.

"We now want to hear from anyone who has seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area, particularly if they were seen to be carrying some kind of air weapon."

Anyone with any information should call PC Riley on 0161 856 7951 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

So you are allowed to shoot them at other times? Which hardly makes the act of shooting one "at the wrong time of year" a cowardly one, does it?

Speaking as a member of the Union for Cowardice and Self-preservation, I'd have pointed the finger at the Society for Thuggery.

This has got their bloodied fingerprints all over it.

Darn thugs.

Thug kills bird with air rifle

How bad have things got in Bolton when even the ducks are carrying air rifles.

It'll be Jack Russells with flick knives next.

The police don't make the laws, just try to enforce them. If you read the Wildlife and Countryside Act thats what it says!

I disagree that they can be shoot at any other times but thats the law...an old one too!!

Why would anyone want to harm a coot like this one?

I wasn't initially sure, but it is lunchtime over here right now, and the more I look at that picture, the more I think about 11 different herbs and spices.

I appreciate and understand the law. My point was that, as it IS legal for most of the year, shooting it is not a "cowardly" act.

Well actually shooting any defenceless creature is always cowardly.
Legality has nothing to do with cowardice. That bird will always be unable to defend itself against attacks like that, therefore, the attacks will always be cowardly.
