Radcliffe Borough 1 Woodley Sports 0
UniBond Division One North THEY have taken their time, but Radcliffe Borough finally hauled themselves off the bottom of the league for the first time this season when they beat fellow strugglers Woodley Sports.
Steve Howson's 34th goal of the season paved the way for Boro to leapfrog Woodley in the table, and move Boro out of the relegation zone.
Howson scored from the spot after Woodley keeper Paul Horridge brought down Griff Jones in the area.
Chances were at a premium in the game, and the closest Boro came to doubling their lead was when Neil Chappell smashed a shot against the post after a jinking run into the area.
"The best team won," said Boro director of football Peter Coyne. "The only way to put right our failure to beat nine men Curzon Ashton last Tuesday was to win - and we did that.
"It was a typical end of season affair, with our lads tired after playing so many matches recently.
"But they only really had one chance and we have to be pleased with that."
Coyne added: "I was pleased for Steve to score again. It was another penalty, but people won't see that when they look at his final goals tally at the end of the season."
