Hotshot Howson hungry for success

7:20am Thursday 17th April 2008

STEVE Howson is hoping to come out best in the battle of the UniBond Division One North hotshots.

The 35-goal Radcliffe Borough striker lines up against FC United's goal machine Rory Patterson hoping to score the goals that will help him finish the league's top scorer - and earn Boro their first piece of silverware since they won the Lancashire Combination League Cup in 1970.

Patterson, with 38 goals to his name, is currently leading the race for the Golden Boot, but the former Prestwich Heys hitman sees tonight's Presidents Cup final as the perfect chance to eat into that three-goal gap.

"I can't wait for the game," said Howson, pictured. "We have nothing to lose.

"It would be nice to finish the season as top scorer, and to get a couple tonight and help us win the cup would be fantastic.

"Rory is a good striker. He uses his body strength well, is quite quick and has a decent amount of experience at this level.

"I am only in my first season at this level, so to finish top scorer would be really good."

Howson, who has been rested in recent games to keep him fresh for the final, is confident Boro have what it takes to beat FC United and win their first cup competition in 38 years.

"We have already beaten them this season, and we don't think there is too much difference between the sides," he added.

"I feel fresher for having a bit of a break, and we are looking forward to playing in such a big game in front of a decent crowd."
