Fake vodka warning in Bolton shops

TRADING standards officers are warning the public to be on the look-out for fake vodka being sold in Bolton.

Investigators carried out raids on shops in the Deane and Little Lever areas this week after customers were sold counterfeit Glen's Vodka.

One woman, who asked not to be named, told The Bolton News she had bought two 70cl bottles at a shop in Deane on Monday night.

She said: "I went to the counter and asked the lady for two bottles. She reached up to the shelf, but as she did so a man, who was also behind the counter, said something in his native language and then she picked up some bottles off the floor.

"I didn't think anything of it, but when I was drinking it at home I remembered an article I had seen in the paper about fake vodka being sold in Leigh.

"I noticed a mis-spelling on the bottle and phoned my neighbour, who had the other bottle, to tell her.

"I had drunk quite a bit of it, but fortunately I don't think it has harmed me."

No counterfeit alcohol was discovered during Tuesday's raids.

However, trading standards officials say Glen's Vodka can be easily identified because the bottle, made by Allied Glass Containers, should have a small AGC logo around the base.

The counterfeit vodka may also have "Ayrshire" mis-spelt on the front label, with the letter "i" missing.

Richard Lindley, head of Bolton trading standards, said: "The bottles which we received complaints about were counterfeit. We are warning people to look out for these bottles as it seems they are available in Bolton. The contents have not yet been analysed but it could be very dangerous and should not be drunk."
