PIONEERING technology designed in Bolton is set to take the American cosmetic treatment industry by storm.

Medical Innovations, based in the Newlands Medical Centre on Chorley New Road, has the trademark and distribution rights for a groundbreaking new treatment to eradicate thread veins.

Veinwave is an alternative to laser treatment and was developed by consultant surgeon Brian Newman in 2001.

He set up Medical Innovations with his son Laurence, specifically to market the technology to hospitals and clinics.

The company is headquartered in Bolton, but has clinics on Harley Street in London and Glasgow.

The technique uses microwave technology to eradicate thread veins and heightened facial redness in a safe and simple way. Medical Innovations say that many doctors prefer the Veinwave system over laser surgery, which can result in unsightly scarring.

The father and son team have sold several hundred of the Veinwave units in the UK and Europe, including big contracts with private hospital groups Nuffield and Spire (formerly BUPA). They believe the US market for the technology is much bigger.

Laurence Newman said: "The potential in the UK was huge, but there is the same potential in just one state, in parts of the US. We will sell to private doctors, hospital clinics and dentists. There is likely to be more competition because of the nature of the market, but there is no direct competition in terms of a product that does something similar."

He added: "We held our first workshop in Chicago two weeks ago and we travel to Pheonix, Arizona this Thursday to present the product. We will be in New York two week after that."

Medical Innovations has a turnover of around £1m and employs five people. It supplies equipment to professional salons for use in non-surgical cosmetic treatments. Its trademark G Form products are used for weight loss, muscle stimulation and lymphatic drainage. They also supply a range of products for hormone replacement therapy (HRT), colon care and anti ageing.

The firm has recently won a contract to supply products for the health spas on board a new cruise liner called The Ventura, owned by P&O.
