Motorists face traffic chaos in Bolton

7:13am Monday 7th July 2008

MOTORISTS are set to face traffic chaos as roadworks start on a busy Bolton road today..

Williams BMW is relocating its regional head office from Manchester to Raikes Lane, Bolton.

The council is installing new traffic signals where the A666 northbound exit slip road from St Peter's Way joins Raikes Lane, as a new entrance to the development will be constructed at this location.

Minor roadworks will also be carried out at the junction of Manchester Road and Croft Street affecting traffic on Manchester Road for short periods.

The roadworks are likely to cause tailbacks and delays./ Bolton Council is asking for motorists' patience during the six-week programme.

A spokesman said: "Roadworks in Raikes Lane have been programmed to coordinate with works by National Grid which is currently upgrading gas mains in Great Lever.

"Temporary traffic signals will be used at certain periods and the slip road from St Peter's Way to Raikes Lane will be closed for six weeks starting on the July 18."

He added: "Some disruption is inevitable but every effort will be made to keep it to a minimum. Motorists are urged to be patient and avoid the roadworks if possible."

Bosses at Williams BMW announced last year that they planned to move into Bolton from Manchester because of the proposed congestion charge. The firm said at the time that if the levy was introduced - as is now likely - it would destroy' Manchester.

The new £10 million base is being built by local firm, G & J Seddon.
