A WOMAN hanged herself after battling depression for almost 20 years.

Marcia Thompson, aged 36, was found dead in the bathroom of her home in Durrington Close, Westhoughton, on October 24, last year.

An inquest at Bolton Coroner’s Court yesterday heard that Mrs Thompson had suffered from depression from the age of 17 and was taking anti-depressants.

Alan Walsh, deputy coroner for Bolton, was told that Mrs Thompson had a history of self harm and had been admitted to hospital in the past after overdosing on her medication.

In recent years, Mrs Thompson had also started to drink more alcohol and a pathologist found her blood contained a cocktail of drink and prescription drugs, but found the cause of death to be that of hanging.

The inquest heard that a nurse from Bolton’s Crisis Resolution Team had spoken with Mrs Thompson just two days before she killed herself.

She was not considered as “an immediate threat” and it was agreed she would receive support while still staying at home.

But two days later her body was found by her husband at around 2.30am.

She had left notes expressing her wish to end her life. Returning a verdict of suicide, Mr Walsh said Mrs Thompson knew she would not be disturbed and did not accept that it was a cry for help.

He said: “This is a very tragic death of a 36-year-old woman who suffered from depression since the age of 17.”
