A RECONSTRUCTION of a car accident in which a pedestrian was killed has been carried out by police.

Egerton Road was shut for a few hours on Saturday morning as officers attempted to piece together the events.

Traffic police cordoned off part of Moses Gates as they furthered their investigation into the incident, which took place on March 18.

Father-of-two Barry Higham, aged 36, of West Street, Farnworth, died after being hit by a car in Egerton Street near to its junction with Cawdor Street.

He was struck by a Mitsubishi Evolution at 6.45pm and was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital, where he died soon after being admitted.

Earlier that morning he had been celebrating his son Kian’s birthday at home with his 27-year-old girlfriend, Sue Nightingale, and his five-year-old daughter, Kelsi.

Sgt John Brennan said: “Reconstructions are carried out to further our understanding of the cause of the accident. Exercises like this are quite usual when there has been an accident.

“This reconstruction was not about jogging people’s memories, though it could well do, but about the technicalities of the accident and involves a number of measurements to give a better picture of what happened.”

Traffic was diverted down nearby roads and officers said that disruption in the area was minimum.

Sgt Brennan said: “We carried out the exercise in the morning as to minimise disruption. The road was closed for a couple of hours and there was no major disruption in the area.”

Police arrested and have since charged Paul Holt, aged 24, of Cherwell Road, Westhoughton, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He is due to appear in Bolton Crown Court on June 26.

Three other men arrested after the incident have been released without charge.
