Jane Grundy used alternative therapies to control her dangerous narcolepsy condition — and is now helping others with complementary therapies.

Jane, aged 43, from Astley Bridge, meditates to help fight her debilitating condition and this has inspired the beauty therapist to run her own clinic.

Despite still needing a full-time carer, Jane is working with the support charity, Bolton Carers, to offer respite and treatments to carers.

At her MediWell clinic in Tonge Moor Road, she helps them to deal with the stresses and strains of looking after a person who is dependent on them.

She said: “The benefits are unbelievable. After two or three sessions, they look completely different people.”

Jane’s own condition means that strong emotions trigger sleep attacks, which means she could collapse at any time.

“I couldn’t laugh for a number of years because it would trigger an attack — you end up living a very isolated life,” she said.

Despite the difficulty which her condition causes, Jane studied at Salford University and said: “That was an absolute dream — my parents couldn’t believe I managed it.

“I used meditation to help get me through it. I still have to do it three or four times a day or I can become quite poorly.

“If you can work with your body through meditation, it’s like you can give your brain a break.”

Sessions are subsidised for carers, so Jane charges them only £10 for any of a range of treatments, including acupuncture, hypnotherapy and Indian head massage with her colleagues, psychotherapist Josephine Cropper, complementary practitioner Julia Mitcham and acupuncturist Stuart Eaton.

Patients can visit the clinic or a MediWell therapist can visit them in their own home.

“There must be people in Bolton who are sitting at home feeling isolated, and getting out for a half-hour treatment or having us come to them would do them so much good,” Jane said.
