by Paul Keaveny Crime Reporter POLICE in Bolton are wearing a new look this week.

Officers and PCSOs are kitted out in their new operational uniform, following a successful trial last year.

The new uniform, worn for the first time yesterday, replaces the existing shirt, men’s tie and women’s cravat, and trousers.

Police officers have a different uniform from PCSOs.

Officers’ uniform is a black top with a zip and black combat-style trousers. PCSOs wear the same style, but in royal blue.

However, officers keep their hats and high visibility coats, and continue to wear body armour and a utility belt as normal.

Feedback from the officers who took part in the trials, all of whom have frontline roles in policing, was positive.

They felt the uniform was right for the job and more comfortable.

Members of the public were consulted about the proposed change too and also showed their support.

A poll on GMP’s website showed that 74 per cent of the public were in favour of modernising the uniform.

Superintendent Catherine Hankinson, who led the review of the operational uniform, said: “It is really important that our officers have a uniform that is comfortable and fit for their purpose, but that reflects the modern nature of their roles.”

The Bolton News fashion editor Jenny Minard said: “In terms of fashion I think the uniform looks a bit nondescript and plain. But I can imagine the top would be more comfortable to wear especially in the summer months.

“I don’t think ties and cravats are necessary in this type of job so it’s nice to see they have been ditched — perhaps making officers more approachable to the public.

“Officers won’t look as smart as they did in shirts but if the new uniform enables them to work more effectively then I applaud the changes.”

She added: “GMP are certainly fashion forward when it comes to modernising the uniform, let’s hope other forces catch on.”
