A 15-year-old girl was rescued after a fire broke out at her home.

Abbey Needham was ill in bed in an attic room at her home in Darwen Road, Bromley Cross, this afternoon when smoke alarms went off.

She managed to get to the first floor and dialled 999 on her mobile phone.

An operator told her to make her way to a front first floor bedroom, shut the door and open a window and wait for firefighters.

But as she finished the call, her mother Julie, and her partner Nasseem Niaz, aged 45, returned home.

Mr Niaz ran into the house, grabbed Abbey, and led her to safety as the firefighters arrived.

The fire had started in the kitchen when a cooker hob was left on. Abbey and Mr Niaz were treated at the scene.

The damage was isolated to the kitchen with smoke damage to rest of the house.
