SOARING temperatures are putting local health services under increased pressure, NHS bosses said last night.
Both the Royal Bolton Hospital and the North West Ambulance Service have reported a rise in demand over the last week.
Temperatures in the borough have reached 27 degrees celsius in the past few days.
The hospital’s accident and emergency department usually sees around 330 people a day but this week attendances have topped 400. There were 372 visitors on Sunday, peaking at 408 on Monday, with 350 on Tuesday and 336 on Wednesday.
Heather Edwards, head of communications, said: “Our A&E department has been particularly busy in the past few days.
“Although so far we haven’t seen much in the way of conditions caused directly by the weather, such as sunstroke or severe sunburn, it is likely that it may have triggered other conditions.”
Hot weather can cause difficulties for people with respiratory problems, for example, asthma and heart conditions.
The North West Ambulance Service had its busiest week of the year so far, exceeding activity levels at Christmas.
In the week up to Sunday, June 29, total calls were up from 12,680 to 13,949.
Bob Williams, NWAS acting chief executive, said: “Over the past week, the Trust has seen a large increase in the number of people suffering from asthma and other respiratory problems.
“We will continue to monitor the impact of the weather. “ Charity Age Concern has not reported any problems with Bolton’s elderly population.
Gareth Evans, the chief officer in Bolton, said: “I think a lot of people know what to do and are being sensible during this hot weather.”
And the RSPCA has reported an increase in activity too.
Kathy Kay, the branch administrator for Bolton, said: “With every animal you’ve got to think how they are going to cope with the weather and make sure that they are comfortable.”
From last night the weather was due to be cooler and wetter, bringing relief after the hottest week of the year so far.
