A CLOSED-circuit television camera has been installed to increase security following a blaze at Horwich Market in the early hours of Wednesday.
Council officers held an emergency meeting following the fire, which broke out just hours after stallholders packed up their wares for the last time as the hall closed its doors for good.
Residents fear that the empty wooden building will become a magnet to yobs and a fire hazard.
The fire, just after midnight also caused an asbestos scare.
But firefighters managed to stop the blaze spreading to the asbestos roof and the rest of the building.
An asbestos survey will take place on Monday, with officers looking to fast-track the demolition of the building.
A camera was installed yesterday on Mottram Street and will cover the market building and the car park.
Police officers and Police Community Support Officers will also step up the number of patrols in the area. Bolton Council’s security staff will carry out additional night-time patrols in the area too.
A newsletter will also be sent to all residents informing them of what to do if they see any suspicious activity in the area.
Malcolm Veigas, Bolton Council’s assistant director of community services, said: “We’re doing everything we can to allay residents’ fears.
“The CCTV, together with all the other actions we’re taking will hopefully deter vandals. We would encourage anyone who does see anyone acting suspiciously to contact the police.”
A new outdoor site for the market will be in operation from today on St John’s Street car park.
