Goods seized at house after police break in

A WARNING shot has been fired to nightmare neighbours who make the lives of residents in their community a misery.

Police yesterday raided a home on the Pungle Estate in Westhoughton.

The action followed a series of complaints by fed-up residents, who said nothing was being done about the high levels of crime.

About a dozen officers from the Bolton West safer neighbourhood team and the Bolton burglary task force smashed through the door of a house in Pinfold Close at 8am.

Suspected stolen goods, mostly electrical items, were seized from the property. Officers believe they are related to domestic burglaries across Bolton and Wigan in recent months.

Cannabis and valium were also found at the house.

PC Phil Burrows, community beat manager for Daisy Hill in Westhoughton, said: “This is part of the ongoing work in the area to target criminal and anti-social individuals that disrupt an otherwise nice estate.

“We are not going to tolerate crime or anti-social behaviour. We are investigating all reports from the area with a view to take action to deal with the problems.”

Last month, Pungle residents discussed the idea of stopping their rent payments unless Contour housing, which manages the estate, takes action to tackle problem residents.

Police were also at the meeting and urged people to report any problems to them.

Kathy Gilfillan, Pungle, Pinfold and Richard Gwynn Residents’ Association chairman, said: “I am absolutely delighted the police are following up any intelligence they get.

“Now we need the relevant agencies to follow up on it in the strongest possible manner.

“We don’t want our children growing up thinking criminal and anti-social behaviour is acceptable or normal.”

A 29-year-old man was arrested for two counts of possessing a controlled drug, on suspicion of theft, and for failing to appear at Wigan Magistrates Court after a warrant had been issued.

Anyone with information about crime in Westhoughton is asked to call the neighbourhood policing team on 0161 856 5685 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
