FRIENDS shocked by the death of a young Westhoughton man are to stage an annual football match in his honour.
Liam Riley was found hanged in January this year and as a tribute his friends, many of whom knew him since his schooldays at St Joseph’s High School, want to raise cash for the Samaritans and to buy a brick with his name on it at the Reebok Stadium.
“Liam’s death has been a massive shock to everyone,” said lifelong friend Peter Walsh, who is helping organise the Liam Riley Cup.
“He was outgoing and fun loving. He was intelligent and brave.”
The first match, in memory of the 23-year-old courier and repairman, takes place tomorrow at Bolton Arena’s 11-a-side pitch from 1.30pm.
A raffle will be held and entry to the match, which the friends are billing as England vs Bolton is £3.
