MP happy with foreign aid pledge

BOLTON West MP Ruth Kelly has welcomed the renewed commitment by the Government to providing overseas aid for countries affected by wars.

Ministers this week unveiled a new policy aimed at meeting the United Nations target of spending 0.7 per cent of gross national product — the market value of all the goods and services produced by a country — on foreign aid.

The policy also sets out new priorities, including making sure every pound of UK aid is spent helping poorer countries adapt to climate change and helping them to expand their economies in a low carbon way.

Other objectives include training police forces, setting up law courts and giving priority to legal measures to tackle violence against women.

Ms Kelly said: “At a time when some are questioning whether we should be cutting our aid budget, I am pleased that the Government remains keen on investing in social justice at home and abroad”
