ITV bosses are moving Coronation Street to prevent it from clashing with Champion's League matches.
The soap will make way for football following a deal struck by ITV to screen games in the European competition on Wednesdays.
In previous seasons, ITV has screened Champion's League football on Tuesdays.
The move is the first time Coronation Street - which celebrates 50 years next year - has been given a regular Thursday slot.
Emmerdale will also be affected with the Tuesday hour-long edition cut to 30 minutes and two separate episodes on Thursdays. The Bill will move to a 9pm start on Thursdays.
ITV also wants to screen FA Cup replays and England internationals on Wednesdays.
An ITV spokesman said: "The volume of both soaps will remain the same, with 180 minutes of Emmerdale stripped across the week and 150 minutes of Coronation Street."
