A LOCAL union boss has backed the Government’s proposals to protect trade unionists from blacklisting.
Julie Hilling, a senior regional organiser for the Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association, said she was appalled that some employers were discriminating against trade union activists.
The Government has launched new regulations that will make it unlawful for trade union members to be denied employment through secret blacklists, following evidence that 40 companies had subscribed to a database used to vet construction workers.
Ms Hilling, who is Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate in Bolton West, said: “The idea that some unscrupulous employers are discriminating against trade union members and activists is appalling and I welcome the fact that the Government is acting swiftly to end the practice once and for all.”
