VIDEO: BMX champ Sam in action . . .

THE current World Champion BMX rider visited a youth project in Bolton to speak to youngsters.

High Rollers BMX Group was set up in 2007 to help give youngsters in the Deane area something to do.

The bikers meet every Friday at the YMCA, in Deansgate, Bolton, and were thrilled to meet Sam Foakes, winner of the BMX Suzuki Masters 2008.

Sam gave the budding champion riders a masterclass in how to control a BMX before chatting to the group and answering questions.

The project was recently awarded £3,500 by the Irwell Valley Housing Association Residents’ Fund, meaning the group can continue its work for another year.

Chris Massey, from the housing association who runs the BMX sessions, said: “We are delighted that Sam was able to take time out of his busy schedule to meet the group.

“Since this project started we have seen a reported decrease in the number of complaints against young people.

“Activities like this are really important because they engage teenagers and give them something to do in their spare time.”

The project is a joint initiative between Irwell Valley Housing Association, the YMCA, Bolton Council and Tonge Bikes, which provide bikes and equipment free of charge.
