A PUB which has returned to its former glory has been given the thumbs-up by a Bolton politician.
The Spread Eagle, in Kearsley, has been revamped since Paul and Shirley Morris took over seven weeks ago.
On Friday, Bolton MP Dr Brian Iddon visited the pub to congratulate Mr and Mrs Morris and meet the punters.
It was part of The Publican magazine’s Proud of Pubs Week — a national campaign to gather support for local pubs.
Dr Iddon, who has been involved with the campaign for three years, said: “At the moment 39 pubs a week are closing down across the country. It is important to get behind our local pubs because they represent community centres where people can get together.
“Since the new people moved in there has been a huge turnaround in business and it was packed on Friday night.
“The locals are pleased with what the couple have done because they felt it had gone down hill.
“It is now an excellent pub, there is a good atmosphere and the beer is on form.”
The couple took over after leaving The Lostock Arms. They were recommended for the campaign by pub group Punch Taverns following the refurbishment’s success.
Mrs Morris said: “It had been an undesirable place for 18 months, with the wrong kind of people going in, but we have cleaned it up and got the old customers back.
“The locals have backed us all the way and have been great. Dr Iddon stayed for a couple of hours.”
