IN the words of Cliff Richard, there were celebrations and congratulations at Farnworth Care Home when popular resident Elsie Mellor reached 100.
And it was only fitting that the song was played to celebrate the occasion as Mrs Mellor is thought to be Cliff Richard’s number one fan.
Mrs Mellor, who was born and lived in Farnworth, turned 100 on Monday, and her family including three grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and one great, great, great grandchild helped her celebrate the milestone.
Mrs Mellor was such a big fan of Sir Cliff that she had photographs of the singer around her house, except the bathroom, and her devotion hit the headlines.
Mrs Mellor moved into the care home three years ago, and is described as a popular member of the group.
She was married to Frank for nearly 50 years and had a son, Jack, who died aged 48.
Activity co-ordinator Carol Evans said: “She enjoyed the birthday celebrations and received a birthday telegram from the Queen and also the work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper.
“The Mayor and Mayoress also attended. Unfortunately, we heard nothing from the Cliff Richard fan club but we did have some of her collection out on show.
“Her one wish is to have met him.”
