SOCKS are generally regarded as a boring Christmas present — but for soldiers in Afghanistan they could be top of the list.
So a Bolton soldier’s mum has set up a “socks in a box” appeal to make sure the brave men and women serving on the front line will not have cold feet this festive period. Pat Carter, from Stoneclough, started the appeal after a conversation with friends when she learned that some soldiers were going without new socks.
“It seems like such a little thing, but it is so important,” she says.
Her son, Paul, is a sergeant in the Royal Engineers and served in Iraq, so Pat knows just how tough conditions can be for the soldiers.
She said: “We have been sending things out for him via the MOD, but we decided we wanted to do something for as many soldiers as we could.”
People can donate new pairs of socks or join together and fill a shoebox themselves.
Pat will collect all the boxes together over the next three weeks and send them out to the troops.
Sports socks are particularly in demand, as are ladies’ socks for female soldiers. Children at Prestolee County Primary School and St Saviour’s Church of England School in Stoneclough will also be collecting for the appeal.
To donate, ring Pat on 01204 799301 or email sedgardens12@ntl world.com to arrange for the socks to be dropped off.
