Shoppers queue up for penny bargains

EVERYONE loves a bargain. But mum-and-daughter team, Anne-Marie Doel and Joanne Kennington, were more determined than most to snap up a bargain at the most recent Marks and Spencer’s Christmas Penny Bazaar.

They arrived at Bolton’s Deansgate store at 6am after reading stories about how queues at the last bazaar in May stretched around the block.

But it seems the cold weather put many shoppers off — as the pair were not joined in the queue until after 8am.

Joanne said: “By the time I got here last time everything had gone, so we wanted to be the first. But no-one else turned up until ten past eight.”

Joanne and Anne-Marie went to the nearby McDonalds three times for a cup of tea and some warmth — much to the amusement of staff.

When the store opened at 9am, the pair were first inside and stocked up on Christmas stocking fillers.

Despite the early start, Joanne said: “I think it would have been worth it more if there had been a lot of people there like last time, but there was only us daft enough to get up and stand in the cold. We did get some Christmas stuff though, so that was quite good.”

Marks and Spencer held the bazaar to celebrate the launch of their Christmas advert, starring models Twiggy, Noemie Lenoir and Myleene Klass alongside Wallace and Gromit, Stephen Fry, Philip Glenister, Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley and James Nesbitt.
