FUNDRAISERS used their twinkle toes to tap and salsa their way to charity success.

More than £1,500 was raised for the Marie Curie Nurses Appeal when 16 people from Bolton took part in a regional contest.

The charity held its inaugural A Chance To Dance challenge at the weekend, with 171 people taking part, raising more than £16,000.

Bolton’s 16 sponsored dancers raised £1,600 which will contribute to a target of £200,000 to provide more nursing care in the borough.

Marie Curie Cancer Care, backed by The Bolton News, launched a campaign to meet the target earlier this year.

The money will enable charity chiefs to employ more nurses and fund free home nursing care for terminally ill people in the town.

The dance event was at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on Sunday.

Professionals put dancers through their paces in workshops, which included ballroom and Latin styles.

Camilla Dallerup, star of TV show Strictly Come Dancing, was due to attend, but jetted out to Australia to take part in reality TV programme I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. Video messages of good luck from Camilla and showbiz legend, Bruce Forsyth, were played.

Among those taking to the dancefloor were friends Anne Powell and Fiona Harrington, who raised £455 between them.

Mrs Powell, of Bromley Cross, said: “It was smashing — a really good day. The atmosphere was great, it was well organised and I’ll definitely be doing it next time.”

Hannah Taylor, community fundraiser for Marie Curie, said: “A Chance To Dance was a fantastic jam-packed fun day of dance, with people completing the challenge of learning four different styles of dance.

“Although my feet are aching, everyone had a great time and the atmosphere was amazing.”
