‘Ice cream van rapist tried to run me over’

AN ice cream man who allegedly raped a woman in his van tried to run her over when she threatened to call police, a court heard.

Javed Iqbal, aged 42, of Bury New Road, Bolton, denies the alleged rape in May, 2006.

He was arrested three years later when police stopped him as part of a routine traffic operation.

Giving evidence at Bolton Crown Court yesterday, the alleged victim, who is a sex worker, told the jury Iqbal held her down in his van before subjecting her to the horrifying attack.

The court heard that Iqbal picked up the woman, now aged 25, in Tonge Moor between 5pm and 6pm on Tuesday, May 23.

She told the court they agreed that she would perform a sex act for £10 but said she did not agree to have sex.

The court heard he drove to Alders Lane, in Tonge Moor, where the woman started to perform the sex act. It was then, it is claimed, that Iqbal raped her.

She told the court: “He wanted more but I said ‘no’. He got over me and held my hands and I couldn’t move. I was telling him to get off me. I said it quite a few times.”

Susan Klonin, prosecuting, asked the witness to describe what happened after the attack.

Miss Klonin said: “Did you have a chat? Did you have an ice cream?”

The woman replied: “No, I told him to let me out. He pushed me out. In other words, ‘I‘ve had what I want now get out’.

“I said I was ringing the police. He saw me with the phone and tried to run me over.”

The court heard the woman had “done business” with the man in his ice cream van on one previous occasion a few months before the alleged attack.

She told the jury she had performed a sex act on him but had not had sex with him. She said there had been “no problems” on that occasion.

The court was also told that about a year after the attack, an Asian man approached the woman and paid her £100 to tell police she did not want to press charges.

She agreed and went to Scholey Street police station to withdraw her complaint.

The trial continues.
