YOUNGSTERS have planted trees in their school grounds so they can grow their own apples.
Pupils at Gilnow Primary School in Deane want to make sure children have a good source of healthy food for years to come.
The initiative is part of a UK-wide tree-planting campaign and is being supported by Bolton Council.
As part of national tree week, youngsters from the school were joined by the council’s sustainable development team, who helped them plant the two saplings.
Deputy headteacher Marion Moulton said: “Our Year Four children had a great time planting the trees.
They are now really looking forward to seeing them blossom in the spring.”
The group planted the trees as part of a national world record attempt for the most trees planted in one hour.
Thousands of people across the UK were encouraged to plant trees between 11am and noon on Saturday.
It has not yet been confirmed if the record has been broken.
Gilnow Primary School pupils are pictured planting fruit trees in the school grounds.
Being watched by Cllr John Bryne are, from the left, Jack Davidson, aged nine, Bradley Bellairs, Humera Khaliq, Annalise Carr, all aged eight and Samiya Hussain, aged nine.
