A publisher is pulping all books by a disgraced writer after he was unmasked as a paedophile.

Former headteacher turned author Dean Hayes, aged 59, is serving a five-and-a-half-year jail sentence for indecency with children. When the revelations about his past came to light earlier this year, Bolton Wanderers stopped stocking all of his books about the club, including his latest, Bolton Wanderers On This Day, which was released this year.

Now, Hayes’ publisher, Pitch Publishing, has pledged to remove his titles from its stock and donate his royalties to charity.

A spokesman for the West Sussex-based publishers, which also prints another Hayes hardback called Bolton Wanderers Miscellany, told The Bolton News that the author had tried to hide the ongoing criminal case from them.

“This news came as a shock, as it did to those retailers stocking the book.

“We would like to thank The Bolton News and Bolton Wanderers FC for alerting us, and having been made aware of Dean Hayes’ appalling criminal actions, we have asked all stockists to return all copies they hold of the book.”

The spokesman added: “We will be pulping the remaining stock we hold of both titles. Additionally, we have terminated our contract with Mr Hayes, and we will be withholding any royalties due to him. Instead, these will be donated to a local Bolton charity.”

This week, Waterstones, HMV and WH Smith pulled copies of Hayes’ books from its shelves when The Bolton News made the stores aware of his past.

In Waterstones, the books were placed on a display on local history under a sign — “Bolton’s Favourite Sons”. The stand was also next to the store’s “True Crime” section.

Hayes, pictured, who has penned more than 100 sports books on football and cricket, including histories of Bolton Wanderers, Manchester United, Everton, Aston Villa and Wigan, could now see his entire back catalogue blacklisted by book stores.

A Waterstones spokesman said: “We are reviewing how many books we have by Hayes across our entire estate and are speaking to his publisher. We are in the process of removing them from any promotion whatsoever.”

Hayes, a former headmaster, was jailed last month after pleading guilty to five specimen counts of indecent assault on children and three counts of indecency with a child.

He used to teach at Brandwood Junior School, Daubhill, and was later a deputy headteacher at Bishop Bridgeman Primary School, Bolton, before becoming headteacher at Brindle St James’ CE Primary, in Chorley, between 1987 and 1995.

Hayes, formerly of Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, admitted abusing two young girls between January, 1991, and December, 1996, and also pleaded guilty to possessing 25 indecent images of children.

The abuse was sustained and took place over a period of years, Preston Crown Court heard last month.
