A CHRISTMAS tree has sparked a row between a town council and its Bolton Town Hall counterparts.
Members of Blackrod Town Council have been told the area is in line to have one permanent tree planted in Pool Green.
The proposal is part of a plan by Bolton Council to save money and affects a number of towns and districts in the borough.
But in previous years, Blackrod has had two trees in Church Street and Scot Lane.
Councillors blasted the proposals at a meeting on Monday night.
Cllr Graham Farrington said: “This is just penny pinching. Scot Lane is already wired up for a Christmas tree. What is stopping the town council from getting another tree?”
The meeting was told that Horwich and Westhoughton have bought decorative lights for around the towns, which Bolton Council pays £500 towards the installation.
Cllr Barrow added: “Where is our £500? I though we were all supposed to be part of the Bolton family, but we have not been part of that.
“I’m furious about this. We never get anything from Bolton at Christmas.”
Cllr Andrew Bower said: “It is commendable and logical to have a permanently planted Christmas tree. But the location proposed is nowhere near what is considered to be the centre. I think we should have two trees not one, like we have always had.”
The town council will write to Bolton Council to ask for the permanently planted tree to be placed at the junction of Manchester Road and Scot Lane. It will also request a £500 donation towards a second tree for Church Street.
