THE Department for Children Schools and Families today published the 2009 secondary school performance tables.

They cover GCSE and A-level examinations, together with their equivalents, taken by pupils last year, and are intended to provide a guide for parents, teachers and education officials as to how different schools perform.

In addition to GCSE success rates, the tables show Key Stage 2 to 4 contextual value-added measures. This is designed to show the progress pupils have made since they took Key Stage 2 tests, taking into account external influences which will affect the progress made by pupils such as levels of deprivation. Scores above 1,000 indicate schools where pupils on average made more progress than similar pupils nationally, while scores below 1,000 represent schools where pupils have made less progress.

The final figure is the school’s ranking within the local education authority based on the percentage of pupils gaining five or more grades at A* to C, including English and maths, at each school.

Ties are broken by the numbers of pupils at a school and then average points score.
