YOUNGSTERS at a Bolton school are taking their learning up, up and away — by studying superheroes.
But when it comes to real-life superheroes, the ice cream man comes top of the list for pupils at Bishop Bridgeman Primary School.
Since Christmas, the pupils at the Great Lever school have been studying what it means to be a hero.
And reception and year three children have been working with artist Matt Carhill to produce portraits of the people they feel are important.
As well as local vicar Roy Iddon, firefighters, builders and librarians, the pupils listed the ice cream man, gardener and dinner ladies as their heroes.
“Thankfully, someone also said a teacher,” said reception teacher Christine Swindells. “It just shows who is important as seen through the eyes of a child.”
The finished portraits will be displayed in the covered outside play area. Each portrait will have a speech bubble so messages can be written to make the pictures interactive.
Reception children have also enjoyed dressing up as their favourite superheroes.
“The kids have loved it. The more fun it is, the more they are learning without realising it,” said Mrs Swindells.
