Ignore begging family, say police

POLICE have urged members of the public not to give money to beggars who have been going door-to-door for handouts.

Since the middle of December, the Bolton East Neighbourhood Policing Team has received 20 complaints from residents.

The family, which has been knocking on doors in Sharples, Astley Bridge and Tonge Moor, tend to work in pairs and carry a sign which says they do not speak English, do not have jobs and asks for money.

Sgt John Boyce said a Polish family had been identified and had been spoken to by the police.

He said that begging was a criminal offence.

He added: “I would urge residents not to give money to anybody who comes door-to-door and never to let strangers into your home.”
