Drink-drive shame of booze binge woman from Breightmet

A WOMAN who drank three bottles of wine, five lagers and a pint of cider was still four times over the limit when she drove to the shops the next day.

A member of the public stepped in when Annmarie Kurthausen stumbled and collapsed on top of a child, who had fallen in the car park of Home Bargains in Bury Road, Breightmet.

Christine Fox asked drunken Kurthausen to hand over her keys when it appeared she was getting back into the car to drive away.

Bolton Magistrates Court heard Kurthausen, aged 33, of Breightmet Fold, Breightmet, was taken home by a friend and was later arrested by police.

The incident at Home Bargains happened at 12.45pm last Sunday. The previous evening, Kurthausen had been drinking at home with friends, the court heard.

Howard Sloane, prosecuting, said that when she was breathalised at 2.30pm, the lowest recording was 144 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Yesterday, Kurthausen pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

The court heard Kurthausen — who cried in the dock as the details were read to the court — was of previously good character.

Peter Leather, defending, said: “She lives with her partner and both are in full-time employment with responsible jobs. She leads an ordinary existence in the community. This lady has made a terrible mistake.

“She is not an alcoholic but she accepts that she binge drinks some weekends.

“She made a very foolish decision to go to the local store and she is obviously ashamed of what has happened.

“She has not drunk alcohol since that day and intends to remain free from alcohol.”

The case has been adjourned until April 13 for sentencing.
