A CARD from the Queen and a visit from the Mayor marked the 100th birthday of a Farnworth pensioner.

Mary Fisher, pictured above, is also known as "Sissie" and lives at Mill View Nursing Home, Bridgeman Street.

She was treated to a champagne celebration with a buffet and a Frank Sinatra sound-a-like.

Friends, relatives, residents and staff presented the pensioner with a birthday cake, gifts and flowers and took lots of photographs at the afternoon party held in her honour.

Widower, Mary, who was a mill worker in her youth had one son, Douglas who died of heart trouble, aged 60. She was born near Liverpool but spent most of her life living in Farnworth.

A keen singer, she came from a musical family and used to sing for the elderly at old folk homes. Today her hobbies are singing hymns and watching television.

Senior Care Assistant, Hilary Bell said: "Mary is smashing, she enjoys a laugh, is very popular and is brilliant for her age."
