THE first of Bolton's new 'economy' council homes was opened yesterday. The Mayor, Counc John Foster, accepted the key to one of the test blocks of 12 houses at Lever Edge Lane only five months after work began. The £95,000 scheme is a new concept in economy homes. The three-person, two-bedroomed homes can easily and cheaply be extended if necessary, cost considerably less than the standard four-person two-bedroomed house, and can be speedily erected.

BOLTON Festival of Britain Sub-Committee has agreed to the planting in trees on certain main roads in Bolton, and has decided that the work should be proceeded with as soon as any requisite consents are obtained. It is planned to plant trees on the north side of Bury-rd. from Breightmet Methodist Church to Mafeking-rd.; St Helens-rd. in the fields on the east side of the road north of Plodder-lane; on Bury-rd. at the junction of Ainsworth-lane and on two sites in the Blenheim-rd. area on Crompton Way on slopes near the railway bridge (Tonge Moor); and on Moss Bank Way on the central reservation between the dual carriageways; and on the Hall i'th' Wood playing fields at the Crompton Way boundary.

SIR,- At the ratepayers' meeting last Friday, about the extension of the borough boundaries, the Mayor said that 'The rates would be raised if they did not extend the boundaries.' That, sir, is plain speaking. The borough boundaries are to be extended to keep down the rates within the borough; and such, no doubt, would be the result of adding places of large rateable value, such as Great Lever, Heaton, and Halliwell, but if I am not greatly mistaken, the addition of such places of the parts of Over Hulton and Middle Hulton would prove a burden instead of a help.

If the Council is really seeking a benefit from an extension in the direction of Hulton, why do they not ask to include the whole townships, with the valuable collieries, mansions, &c. which the proposed parts do not contain. As this part of the scheme is at present propounded it seems to me to be intended to benefit nobody but the lawyers and the landowners. I am, sir, yours respectfully, O.B.
