A FATHER and son fell victim to weapon-wielding thug Jonathan Carroll.

Using an iron bar or baseball bat, the 19-year-old caused more than £1,000 worth of damage to two cars belonging to Athaur Rehman and his son, Aqueel Ur-Rehman, in a terrifying incident.

Bury magistrates were told Aqueel, a taxi driver, was stopped by a group of youths as he drove along Holme Avenue at 1.30am.

Several of the gang tried to get into the car and there was a vicious altercation during which Aqueel was attacked but he managed to drive off.

Marion Nolan, prosecuting, said he then stopped at the house of a friend to get help but there was no one there.

When he returned to his car he found a youth kicking it.

Police were called and they arrived a short time later with Aqueel's father.

After the police left, the father and son were suddenly confronted by Carroll who was swinging the bat or iron bar which shattered the car windscreen.

On a separate occasion, Carroll broke into St Francis House Church and community centre, Brandlesholme, caused more than £500-worth of damage and stole two lawnmowers.

Carroll, serving 15 months in a young offenders institute, pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage and theft.

Magistrates decided Carroll should be sentenced by Crown Court and a hearing was set for June 14.
