PUPILS at Withins School enjoyed a different kind of lesson this week when they were taken for a ride -- without leaving the classroom.

The youngsters at the Breightmet school were given the chance to put their motoring skills to the test by a new hi-tech driving simulator.

They had a chance to negotiate traffic lights and roundabouts by using the £500,000 equipment.

The three TV screens allowed the young drivers to familiarise themselves with the basic skills of clutch control, steering and gears.

The simulator, based on a Vauxhall Corsa, allows pupils to get to grips with driving before they venture out on the road.

It is being toured around Bolton schools including Turton High, Sharples High and Harper Green by driving school BSM.

Mark Williams, BSM roadshow manager, said: "Learning to drive is a number one priority for most young people.

"The roadshow gives students the chance to drive a car in a safe and controlled environment.

"It also allows them to have some fun at the same time."
