THE race is on to build Bolton's first multi-screen cinema.

Leisure firm THI today announced that it is "full steam ahead" for its massive £25 million entertainments complex in the Tonge Valley.

The final planning go ahead for the scheme was given on Thursday.

Developers Orbit have already announced that work will start next month on the Warner Bros cinema at the Bolton Wanderers sports village in Horwich.

But Chester-based leisure firm THI is determined not to be left behind and say their cinema will be Bolton's first.

Mr John Carroll, THI technical director said: "It is one of our most exciting projects and I am sure it will be a major attraction not just for Bolton, but for the North-west as a whole."

The company is still not naming the cinema operator or other firms who have signed up because of "client confidentiality."

But Mr Carroll added: "They are prestigious big name companies and I am sure everyone will be impressed when we make that announcement."

As well as the cinema, the 250,000 sq ft development will have ten pin bowling, bingo, a nightclub, health club, restaurants and a family entertainments centre.

The project is part of the city challenge scheme to transform the Halliwell area and the Tonge Valley.

Mr James Brown, city challenge vice chairman, said: "It will create not only much-needed jobs, but it will also provide a marvellous facility for local people right on their doorstep, whether they are using public transport, walking or driving."
