THE nine-carat gold 1923 FA Cup final medal presented to former Bolton Wanderer George Kay was sold for £4,560 at Christie's in London.

The ex-Bolton star who played against Bolton in the historic first FA Cup Final at Wembley, had been told by the auction experts that his medal might sell for between £2,000 and £3,000. It made £1,500 more than what was expected.

After leaving Bolton, Kay captained West Ham in the 1923 FA Cup final and later went on to manage Southampton and Liverpool.

At the same auction, three rare Bolton Wanderers football programmes from the clubs African tour of 1959, sold for £110.

They had been tipped to sell for between £200 and £300.
