Steam trains get on summer track

STEAM-TRAIN lovers will be able to board the legendary Fellsman service on the Settle to Carlisle railway this summer.

The train will be hauled every week throughout summer by a variety of locomotives, including Scots Guardsman and Leander.

Passengers will be able to board at Lancaster, Preston, Bamber Bridge, Blackburn, Clitheroe and Long Preston, and a connecting service to Blackburn is available from Bolton.

A spokesman for the service said: “The Settle and Carlisle line is known for its magnificent scenery and steep gradient, so our engine will be working hard as we climb to the Ribblehead Viaduct with stunning views of the three peaks before entering Blea Moor tunnel.”

The Fellsman’s run will start on Wednesday, June 2, and continue every Wednesday from July 28 to September 8.

Tickets start at £63 for adults and £49 for children.

Passengers will also be able to enjoy the Lakelander service, which starts via a diesel train from Bolton before continuing under steam power to Carnforth.

It will pass through Silverdale, Arnside, Grange-over-Sands, and Ulverston, ending at Ravenglass. It runs on Saturday, June 19 and Saturday, July 17.

Tickets start at £69 for adults and £59 for children. For tickets, call 0845 310 2458.
