A HIT and run driver who killed a 36-year-old father and tried to cover his tracks was driving at 70mph, a court heard.

Zaffer Khurshid, aged 21, of Kilnhurst Walk, Bolton, is today starting a four-year jail sentence after admitting hitting father-ofone Robert Allen in Chorley Old Road last year.

Kurshid’s brother, 24-year-old Asad Khurshid, was given a suspended sentence at Bolton Crown Court yesterday after admitting he lied to police and gave officers a forged document.

Peter Barr, prosecuting, said Zafeer Khurshid enjoyed driving the car, which belonged to Asad, because “he liked the power of it and enjoyed putting his foot down”.

Mr Allen, of Bedford Street, Bolton, was walking home when he was struck by the black Volvo S60 near Queen’s Park about 9.30pm on October 23 last year.

He suffered extensive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The court heard Zafeer Khurshid, sped off with his girlfriend in the passenger seat and then dumped the car.

Mr Barr said Khurshid then threw away his mobile phone and sim card and created a false story, persuading his girlfriend to do the same.

Asad Khurshid created a fake receipt and told police he had sold the car earlier that day.

Judge William Morris told Zaffer Khurshid: “You were travelling at very high speed, about 70 miles per hour, along an urban road not too far from this court building.

“You drove away without stopping and then for a time failed to report the accident, taking some steps to evade responsibility, but that was for a relatively short time.”

Mr Allen’s devastated family and friends were in court yesterday to see the Khurshid brothers brought to justice.

At an earlier hearing, Zaffer Khurshid pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving but denied attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Asad Khurshid received an eightmonth jail sentence, suspended for two years.

He pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing.

After the hearing, Det Insp Andy Meeks said: “Driving recklessly has serious consequences as Zaffer has discovered today.

“Not only did he cause the collision, which killed Robert, Zaffer and his brother Asad fabricated a story to try and justify the high speed Zaffer was driving at.

“In particular, Zaffer's actions were cowardly and he will now have plenty of time to contemplate the devastation he has caused.”
