HUNDREDS of jobs are under threat in Bolton after Royal Bank of Scotland announced plans to close call centres across the UK.
Bank bosses have said Ashton House on Waterloo Street is one of the administration centres faced with closure.
It employs around 200 people, although some staff could be re-deployed to other call centres.
The RBS branch in Horwich is one of only 10 nationwide to remain open.
Chiefs have said it will be "days or weeks" until it will be known how many people will be affected.
Nationally, 3,500 jobs are under threat at 12 centres and the cull will start next year and run through to the end of 2012.
An RBS spokesman said: "Having to cut jobs is the most difficult part of our work to rebuild RBS and repay taxpayers for their support.
"We continue to make efficiencies across our business and adjust our plans in line with the divestments we have been required to make by the EU. "We will do all we can to support our staff, offer redeployment opportunities wherever possible and keep compulsory redundancies to an absolute minimum.”
RBS said around a third of the job cuts come as a direct result of the sale of 318 branches to Santander, which it was ordered to offload by the European Commission.
