Home to benefit from green technology

A FAMILY home in Kearsley is being fitted with the latest green technologies as part of a unique pilot scheme that could shape homes of the future.

The house, pictured, in Cypress Grove, is one of only 50 across the country to be awarded £134,620 to pay for modifications to massively reduce carbon usage of an average household.

The property will also be studied over a two-year period to find out which technologies work best.

Work has started on adapting the 1940s two-storey three-bedroom semi-detached house and, once completed, it will have tripleglazed ventilating window units, 100 per cent low energy lights triggered by smart controls, low energy electrical appliances, a ground-source heat pump system to provide central heating and roof-mounted photovoltaic — solar — panels.

The funding for the scheme was provided by a competition run by the Technology Strategy Board, an arms-length company attached to the Government.

A bid, on behalf of Bolton At Home, was entered by architects Broadway Malyan who will now carry out the work on the property.

A council spokesman said: “We’re committed to reducing carbon emissions and taking action to make a cleaner, greener Bolton.

This is one of only 50 homes to be granted funding in the country and transforming the house in innovative ways will improve its efficiency, reduce energy consumption and ultimately result in a significant reduction in overall carbon emissions.

“The council has a carbon management plan in place to drive down carbon emissions and this home fits in with our commitment to taking it forward. It demonstrates how Bolton Council is taking the lead in identifying ways to improve the environment and reducing energy costs.”

Cllr Noel Spencer, chairman of Bolton at Home, said: “We’re delighted to have been awarded funding that will allow Bolton to play a key role in a national study into carbon reduction technology and the potential for greater energy saving in the home.

“This is a key opportunity at no additional cost to us to pilot the latest innovations.”
